The ConuerorU so It s Ceidre s misfortune to have a knack with herbal remedies and also a wandering eye which twists the superstitious knickers of those around her Her eye is conveniently referred to whenever she needs to be an object of distrust or have her self esteem crushed There is nothing about her finding it a bit hard to focus on things or osing her balance at odd times because the eyes aren t uite working together I know of what I speak because I haz one So the poor eye was trotted out to get the same convenient beating over and over and then shut away in the author s Closet of Forgetfulness the rest of the timeAnd who s that Why it s Rolfe Or The Relentless as his John Dollar latest winning streak of rampaging and pillaging has earned him uite the fearsome rep He s a tall boy golden and glowing a wencher and rogerer Hel take you front back and sideways from dusk to dawn and his Little Rolfe will still be raring to go A very tumescent shaft has he and you will practically know its topography by the time you re done with the book I would even go so far as to say that it is a character in itself since it propels events as much as anybody else does and the very thought of it can completely confuzzle Ceidre It has authoritah Respect itMeet Alice Ceidre s half sister and a Witch spewing harridan of invective She s not a very nice person and if you turn her sideways she s about as thin as a piece of paper Or in fancy talk one dimensional She has about one note that she plays on a screechy Rebooting India little instrument called her voice She hates the physical side of sex until Rolfe gives it to her rough and then she taps into her kinky side wanting toet her mean freak flag fly She can scratch skin with her kinky ittle claws but barely the surface of my interestThese were the three main characters and there was far too much of them as they circled each other in close confines By about page 100 we had reached the height of their development and it was a slow circling of the drain from there on out Rolfe and Ceidre were especially frustrating as a cycle of betrayal imprisonment hate sex ove sex betrayal etc was repeated over and over Rolfe grows a Time After Time little bit in his attitude towards Ceidre but he regresses in a contrivance so he can be the rampaging brute from page 1 before snapping back to Good Rolfe for theast clinch And the The Cost of the Forbidden (Irresistible Russian Tycoons last 160 pages contained so much sex that I got bored since the first 260 pages was packed full of sexual thoughts In fact the three main characters think ofittle but sex for about 80% of the time Repetitive Oh a tadI ve heard this 1990 book was a throwback to the old bodice rippers and is uite controversial I thought it was a mess of Old Romance Meets New Romance The first chapter ends with Rolfe nearly raping Ceidre and Rolfe is a total Alpha male so the Old Skool stuff is well represented But Rolfe has that weird post Heroine meeting Revulsion of Female Flesh that drives him to jealous insanity He must have her No other He sleeps with a peasant and also wife but it s the He must have No other He sleeps with a peasant and also his wife but it s the of Ceidre s sweet tender flesh and those feelings he holds but can t name ie Love that turn him into a cartoonish Hulk Smash It s that obnoxious priestly blue balls syndrome post heroine that drives me Her Unforgettable Royal Lover loony in the new romance because some authors practically fetishize itMaybe it was the over emphasis on the sex that annoyed me Everything else plot andogic took a backseat For example and I won t go into detail to spoil it for anyone Rolfe proves himself a total imbecile of a jailer twice TWICE and yet William the Conueror remands Ceidre back into Rolfe s custody because all my prisons are full Sure There was no other First to Fight lord with a keep that had a spare room anywhere else in the kingdom But Rolfe and Ceidre have to get back onto the same real estate for the sexual drama to continue unabated Seriously enough was enough with theeaky ady parts and exploding fruit imagery and the mental piledriving and writhing I started out iking the book but by the end they weren t a Norman Catacomb lord and a Saxon wench but a walking penis and vagina Not two brain cells between them to rub together but they did plenty of rubbing anywayBlah The I think about it the annoying it wasOh and for all you sueamishadies who hate those old clinch covers how about some unsubtle symbolic penetration for the reissue There are times when one comes across a book that has received many a bad review and while one perfectly understands the case many of those reviews make against it nevertheless one cannot help but find it a compulsive read Once in a while along comes a historical romance that makes you Queen Esther the Second Graders of Doom love it even despite of yourself even while recognising its failures The Conueror is one such book for me perhaps the only one Part of the pleasure I derive from my many re reads of it is due to the fact that this book could not have been written today Or rather it is derived from imagining how it would beike had it been written today It would have been an utter bore absolutely awful and without any of the pleasure Joyce s book generates The Norman ord would have Been Kind And Charitable To kind and charitable to he would have never ever helped himself to the women around him that part would have been assigned to the now customary caricature villain of the story he would have asked for permission every time he wanted to speak to the heroine and he d have apologised to her every time he raised his voice above a whisper or stood close to her or undermined her in any way he would have constantly apologised for anything and everything connected to the heroine he would most certainly have not married the egitimate daughter of another A Ranchers Vow (Sons of Silver Springs) (Sons of Silver Springs) (Harlequin Intrigue lord as his king ordered him to do and as his time would have made it unthinkable to refuse his king he would have never had. He Saxon beauty Ceidre Alice’s illegitimate sister whose spirit and sensuality made him risk treason to have her not Lady Alice in his bedThe PrizeMysterious and seductive she was noady but a spy for the rebel cause of her noble half brothers Refusing to ,

Any illegitimate issue Jazz Funeral left right and centre as our hero has and if he perchance did he would have been a very involvedoving father to them all he would not have had the heroine married off to one of his men and then promptly claimed The Doctors Pregnancy Surprise le droit du Seigneur as Joyce s delicious hero does nor would he have had the heroine flogged in public for freeing a prize prisoner the heroine s half brother ordering the man administering the flogging not to break skin Nor would we have been gifted with such a super naughty scene of al fresco male masturbation since even the sex scenes in historical romances while explicit so than those in Joyce s book are utterly devoid of delectation following as they do 21st c gender etiuette to theetter If you want everything in your historical romances to make sense plotwise then this is not for you but if you want a historical romance that manages to give a accurate picture of the relation between Norman Fearless (Warriors Of The Dragon Banner, lords and the conuered it is still terribly idealised and prettified worry not but manages to avoid being completely false if you want a hero who manages to convince as a Normanord then you could do much worse than read this book I personally enjoy this story and the hero enormously I find the book scrumptiously titillating and erotic in a way that I don t recent and explicit and I have nothing against explicit au contraire historical romances and I When Valentines Collide like very much that the writer s contemporary voice while there it is neither terribly intrusive nor beats you over the head with a hammer CNF pg 265 or 63 %I try not toeave rating for a book I don t finish but I m so disgusted with what I think is my very first TSTL hero in a historical romance He was William the Bastard s most able and trusted military commander and helped Will of Normandy conuer England in this book at any rate if not for real Willie was a badass I d don t think it at all far fetched to expect Wills top guy to NOT be a whipped pathetic wussy sap for first 60% of the book when he doesn t even do anything with the h I can t stand her until AFTER 60% He Navigating Japan's Business Culture: A Practical Guide to Succeeding in the Japanese Market lightly am ashamed that I is as much as I did It is a book that for all intents and purposes should ve been violent act on her wedding nightto another man There is plenty of roughanguage violent battles an evil step sister torture of the heroine betrayal of the hero and this is all by page 190 It is appalling how Rolfe treats Ceidrehe abuses her sexually from the first moment they meet and feels Pilgrim Snail like he owns heryuck It is also appalling how Ceidre treats Rolfeshe betrays him given any chance and hasittle remorse until the end even though she knows she is his Acheilles Heel She uses his feelings for her against himyuck Why on earth did I ike this disturbing and horrific bookLike the title says it s my guilty pleasure Although Rolfe abuses Ceidre he also protects her relentlessly He stands up for her against everyoneher sister his king and his best friend He is absolutely obsessed with her safety and well being She is EVERYTHING to him and even though he friend He is absolutely obsessed with her safety and well being She is EVERYTHING to him and even though he it is wrong he can t seem to stop himself from wanting her I don t know but there was something about his relentless pursuit of her despite her betraying actions that did something for me Ceidre was also very ikeable She was a devoted healer and I Loving Lies (Summer Lovin, love that trait in a heroine She had backbone and had Rolfe s head spinning throughout the entire book Ioved how she dealt with the powerful Rolfe even though I hated her constant betrayals This book isn t for everyone but it worked for me I Caught in His Gilded World like a passionate couple and they don t get any passionate than Rolfe and Ceidre After reading all the controversy about this book and other Historical Romance written in theate 1980 s and early 90 s I recently re read this novel This is a great read and gives the reader a glimpse of the harsh and sometimes cruel The Viscount The Virgin lifeived by most people of that time period This novel takes place right after the Norman conuest of England in the 11th Century The story gives the reader the feeling of chaos and danger in a time of great upheaval Men and women both had to be tough to survive Times sure have changed most people Fantastic Stories Summary The Conueror

Trigger warnings domestic violence rapeSometimes you read a book and feel badly about how much you enjoyed it This is one of those books So he rapes her He tries to rape her when they first meet then rapes her for reals ater And she oves him Oo I shake my head at myself I feel Wellness, Not Weight like I should be really upset about this but I m not FOR SHAME I am shamed Moving onI was going t Iingered between 4 5 stars because it s not that I don t have issues with this book However most of those issues are cultural in nature than anything You really have to try hard to put yourself into a world with an almost completely different set of moral standards and beliefs And remember that RL at the time would have The Myth of Psychology likely been even harsher than what Joyce shows us Bottomine is this is a page turner and I felt the ove between Rolfe and Ciedre A five it will have to be although if GR would et me I d remove a half star for Alice s sakeThis book has been reviewed many many times so I m not going to give a synopsis I will ramble some about my misconceptions thoughI m a fan of the bodice ripper but had actually sworn off ever reading this classic of the genre due to one major plot pointCHEATING I absolutely hate cheatingview spoilerYes Rolfe marries Ciedre s Perfect legitimate sister to secure power He doesn t want her though and he s not exactly bed hopping the way I assumed he would be from the reviews It was a while before he ever consummated the marriage and the few times he does sleep with Alice are all about Ciedre he must try and forget her he s horny for her he s angry at her etc Poor Alice though right In a way yes She didn tove Rolfe but still I m sure it s humiliating to know he s screwing her illegitimate half sister However she was not a nice person and also made many of her own troubles She d HATED Ciedre all her Going Om life out of jealousy I think Daddyoved her even though she was a bastard Plus Ciedre was incredibly beautiful From the very beginning Alice sets off on the wrong foot with Rolfe by insulting Ciedre s birth and taking every opportunity to be cruel to her If there was one thing Rolfe couldn t stand it was someone mistreating Ciedre aside from himself PAnyway if Alice had concentrated on being ess of a vindictive b her story would have turned out differently and who knows maybe Rolfe would have even kept his vow to eave Ciedre alone Regardless her eventual banishment to a convent where she committed suicide was sad and seemed very unfair Yes she d defied Rolfe one too many times by trying to maim hurt kill Ciedre And an unwanted wife s banishment to a convent was probably fairly common Still it was sad and I d remove 12 a star for it if I could I know it s an overused plot device but I kinda wish they d killed her off in a different way However that fate had to be saved for Ciedre s husbandCiedre was married to Rolfe s best man Guy It was neither s choice Rolfe ordered it to put Ciedre in a position where she d be watched and wouldn t get herself into trouble she was always spying for her brothers Plus he knew Guy was the type of man who would be good to her Rolfe worried A LOT about her doing something that she d have to be punished harshlykilled for and he d have no way to prevent it Anyway Ciedre and Guy never consummated their marriage He was very good to her but he thought she was a witch every once in a while she had a azy eye that witch every once in a while she had a azy eye that its appearance and freaked out the townfolk Anyway Guy was than happy to take the Pulling the Vampires Braid (A Loving Nip land Rolfe gave him as dowry and continue sleeping with all the kitchen maids He did get killed in the final battle with Ciedre s brothers however which was obviously for convenience hide spoiler There were no good characters No one had any ualities to admire or to enjoy reading aboutThis is a melodrama of people hurting other people through stupidity jealousy cruelty selfishness and insensitivity This was not entertaining I never smiled or had a pleasant feeling My emotional reaction was yuck I wanted it to be over A few of the characters frustrating unpleasant and unsympathetic actions are in Spoilers belowCAUTION SPOILERSCeidre and Alice are half sisters Rolfe meets Ceidre and falls inust with her immediately He dislikes Alice but marries her for property reasons Alice hates Ceidre out of jealousy and other reasons Alice uses every chance she can to hurt Ceidre and three times nearly kills Ceidre Alice creates false evidence that Ceidre is a spy so she could put Ceidre in a dungeon Later Ceidre stupidly tells Alice that Ceidre is going to have sex with Rolfe in order to spy for her brothers Alice is happy because she plans to tell Rolfe that Ceidre admits to using sex with him for the purpose of spying Why would Ceidre ever tell this to her enemy Alice Rolfe does a number of things that are not ikeable including the following He arranges for his best friend and one of his warriors Guy to marry Ceidre but Rolfe spends the wedding night with her raping her Later he orders her to come to his bedroom He insults her and tells her that he prefers Alice for the night Ceidre starts encouraging with Rolfe Although they are married to others Ceidre and Rolfe sex freuently and fall in ove with each other However
