If in 100 years I m only known s the man who invented Sherlock Holmes then I will have considered my life failure Sir Arthur Conan Doyle This review will contain minor spoilers Although Sherlock Holmes Dr John Watson Mycroft Holmes nd Professor James Moriarty re Doyle s most known creations Professor Challenger the hot tempered scientist is nother character that many readers will be familiar with This is the first of the Professor Challenger series nd the only one that I had read previously I started reading religiously in 2012 nd The Lost World was one of my favourite stories from my pre review era I decided to re Who doesn t wish dinosaurs weren t still round Well maybe not the big bitey ones but how cool would that be Hell I d even take the huge face ripping ones too if it were n ll or nothing deal I figure Bound (Torn Trilogy, a little survival of the fittest would do this world good Since that s not likely to happen during my lifetime I ll console myself with moviesnd books The Lost World is good place to be for those of us looking to get lost in dino world This is forerunner of the what if history throwbacks to the Jurassic period Being n older work it suffers for the style of the day Sometimes writing styles of various eras ren t ll that bad but this one s no good Nothing kills the momentum surprise Loyalty and Lies and thrill of reading when theuthor preempts thrilling surprise scene by nnouncing that Fortunes Flames a thrilling surprise happenednd I m bout to tell you bout it Damn it man we can decide if it s thrilling nd further do you even know what surprise isArthur Conan Doyle did better work with his Sherlock series This book is fun dventure but it s not great read The set up takes while The ction moves bit nd the stakes re fairly high but Claiming Her a bitnd fairly shouldn t be the descriptives used to describe this I don t like to end the book so soon I really love this book lthough I expected something gorier like dinosaur killing the whole tribe or cannibals eat human flesh Still I did love this book in many ways nd s long s I live I ll treasure this book forever Hey stop looking to me like that I can still remember ll the things I read from the book AmenThe whole journey started when Gazette Irish journalist named Malone went go straight to the house of notorious Professor Challenged claims that dinosaurs exist To give them proof the scientist sent way team nd of course himself to journey that they won t regret forever that talks bout surviving extinction Murder Go Round and friendship But when they went home sudden change of fate is waiting for themThis is How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World: A Comparative Analysis a good booknd reminds me of The Time Machine It has the same narration with the book Alcohol Fuels: Policies, Production, And Potential and the story was kind of documentation by letters of their journey through the land of extinction Therere boring parts in the book nd mostly those parts re in the beginning before they left Anyway I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read Arthur Conan Doyle s works Cambridge Modern History volumes 1-5 and people who love prehistoricnimalsAs The Heart Of The Hawk (Book 1) a science student I have problem regarding the usage of scientific name on chapter 8 About Nuttonia vexillaria said to be Spices, Saints, and Saracens: The Egyptian Wanderings of a Dominican Friar, 1483 a rare plantnd the second word

Take the Leap. Live On Purpose. as whole there was far too little to fully enrapture my ttention I ll stick with Holmes Move side SherlockSir Arthur has conjured Holding Up the Universe a protagonist who sn even rrogant ssbag than you Everyonethe intrepid the indefatigable the insufferable Professor GE Challenger If like me you enjoy characters that Satellite are gruff prideful curmudgeonly sorts than you will have fun with this guy He is serious hoot Trust me Physically Prof Challenger is Blank Darkness a funhouse mirror reflection of Mr Holmes Instead of tall lanky clean shaven gentlemen who calmly condescends to the world round him we have short barrel chested physically imposing caveman with Makers a booming voicend serious nger management issues Tell me he doesn t look like the spitting image of Blutofrom Popeye HmmmIntellectually however Challenger is definitely pea from the same pompous pod Americana: A 400-Year History of American Capitalism as Doyle s most famous literary creation Zero charm no social gracesnd chip on his shoulder the size of Gibraltar He is serious piece of unrestrained windbaggery that pins the needle on the Arrogasshat Pricktardo Scale And he doled out some serious happy to me while I reading Like Holmes of whom I m screaming "fanboy I found GE Challenger to be enormously fun to listen to s he waxed " I found GE Challenger to be enormously fun to listen to s he waxed ABOUT HIS GREATNESS AND SCIENTIFIC ACUMEN his greatness Haunted Houses For the Millions and scientificcumen I wouldn t want to spend ny real life time socializing with the ill mannered prig s literary companion he s n Playing with Fire: How the Bible Ignites Change in Your Soul absolute blast I can think of no better way to introduce you to the professornd s The People's Songs: The Story of Modern Britain in 50 Records anbsolute blast I can think of no better way to introduce you to the professor nd over the top disagreeability than the method employed by Doyle to unveil him to readers of The Lost World When reporter Edward Malone hiding his true vocation reuests meeting with the reclusive scientist this is the letter he receives in reply SIR I have duly received your note in which you claim to endorse my views lthough I m not The Dawn of Christmas aware that theyre dependent upon endorsement either from you or nyone else You have ventured to use the word speculation with regard to my statement upon the subject of Darwinism nd I would call your Bark attention to the fact that such word in such Eden's Gate a connection is offensive to degree The context convinces me however that you have sinned rather through ignorance Her Bear Twins and tactlessness than through malice so Im content to pass the matter by You uote Bumps, Bruises and Bouncing Back: A Young Woman's Adventures into Womanhood an isolated sentence from my lecturend ppear to have some difficulty in understanding it I should have thought that only sub human intelligence could have failed to grasp the point but if it really needs My Lady Viper (Tales From the Tudor Court, amplification I shall consent to see yout the hour named though visits nd visitors of every sort re exceeding distasteful to me As to your suggestion that I may modify my opinion I would have you know that it is not my habit to do so fter deliberate expression of my mature views You will kindly show the envelope of this letter to my man Austin when you call s he has to take every precaution to shield me from the intrusive rascals who call themselves journalists Yours faithfully GEORGE EDWARD CHALLENGER Yeshe s like that Plus he s violent uick tempered pig headed racist elitist nd is not bove putting his wife in time out when he feels she has misbehaved Yeah he s pretty much the whole package of wesome Once I read that I knew I was in for something loaded with win PLOT SUMMARY Not sure this is really necessary so I will keep this brief As the title suggests this is one of the rchetypes of the lost world genre nd Sir Arthur brings his usual skill to its execution A journalist the Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man aforementioned Edward Malone eager to impress his girlfriend reuests dangerous The Light in Our Houses assignment He lands doozy when n expedition is planned to prove or disprove Challenger s claim of having discovered n isolated region of the inhabited by dinosaurs pterodactyls nd other extinct nd exotic creatures Together with Challenger How to Get People to Do Stuff: The Psychology of Persuasion another professor the obligatory skepticnd Lord Roxton the standard rough nd ready dventurer the four embark on their fateful uestFrills thrills spills chills nd kills ensuein bundanceTHOUGHTS This is by the numbers storytelling for this sub genre but Doyle s talent nd engaging prose His three companions deep into the jungle to lost world where dinosaurs roam free Highland Hucow: Milking Marie and the natives fight out murderous war with their fierce neighbours the pe men. Ake it lot of fun It s given that the fantastic elements of the story have to n extent lost their bility to deliver the WOW that they originally produced nd the book s sense of depicting the truly wondrous does suffer Edward Keating a bits Berlin på 8 kapitel a result Still I was pleasantly surprisedt how engaging the narrative was Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City and how much fun I had listening to Challengernd his colleagues expound with fervor on their dated scientific theories Excellent storytelling has no expiration date Shelley And Nonviolence and Doyle like contemporaries HG Wellsnd Jules Verne has the bility to engage nd captivate his Cross (Jack Taylor, audience with the wonders of bygone ge I enjoyed myself Sir Arthur Thank you 35 stars Recommended A young reporter Ed Malone was madly in love The woman he loved told him he would only have chance with her if he did something really heroic The most heroic The Lady and the Generals: Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma's struggle for freedom action his editor could think of was to send him to interview Professor Challenger notorious for throwing the reporters out of his house literally throwing out Initially poor Malone repeated the previous experience of his colleagues but he managed to pacify the professor to tell him his story The main idea was that the guy claimed he found Stripped to the Bone a remote place in ian jungle where prehistoricnimals read dinosaurs still lived To make Trials: On Death Row in Pakistan a long story shortn expedition was formed to check the location nd our reporter realized this might be exactly the opportunity to do the heroics so he became one of the volunteers This book is supposed to be classic Signs From The Afterlife: How the Other Side can comfort and inspire you adventure so I will not spoil much when I say that the expedition really found what they were looking for This might be not the first book to use the lost world troupe but it is most famous Everything one expects to find in classic dventure is here last minute escapes mysterious jungle testosterone overload people trying to shoot ny nimal in sight nd just pure undiluted fun perfect for getting out of book slump caused by reading too many mediocre books in row The first half of the book takes place entirely in London Usually in such books this is the most boring part but not here The character of Professor Challenger The Story of My Purity: A Novel alone successfully carried this whole part by himself This says somethingbout the uality of the way he was written Then Make Mead Like a Viking: Traditional Techniques for Brewing Natural, Wild-Fermented, Honey-Based Wines and Beers again what did you expect from the creator of Sherlock Holmes The narrator Malone comes outs Billie Holiday a decent characters well but he is to Professor exactly what Doctor Watson is to his famous friend lost in the shadow of great personI can lso mention political correctness there is none racism if you read the book looking for it you will find it but I personally liked the way most non white people were shown fearless nd loyal sexism gain there is no strong women in here meaning none which can beat the crap out of The Leader any dinosaur using her martialrts skill If you The Human Sexes are the type of person who read old books to find something to be offendedt this one can provide you Cannibal Sector 1 a lot of material If you keep your mind open never forgetting when the book was written it really does not haveny of the things The Essential Andhra Cookbook with Hyderabadi Specialities as hey saw them in Victorian England I mentionedbove Book Reviewed by Clive on wwwwhisperingstoriescomAfter his initial success Conan Doyle spent much of his literary career trying to break free from Sherlock Holmes but public pressure nd the need for good income kept the two inexorably bound His historical novels found little success but he chieved with his science fiction dventures of which The Lost World was by far the most successful And rightly so This tale of Zohar (5 Volume set) a hidden world is full ofction with many mysteries to ponder Just imagine the excitement of the readers of Strand Magazine s they waited for the next episode of the story to be published just what creatures or predicaments would our heroes meet nextAs far s I know Conan Doyle never travelled up the He obtained his knowledge from other people s ccounts but his descriptions of the jungle re excellent nd help to build the tension before they even reach the site of the lost worldDespite the Age Of The Book And The Language Of The Time of the book nd the language of the time found it easy to read Having the story written in the first person helped to maintain the tension nd fearThe principle characters re those one would expect from Pirates, Punks Politics anction story of that time "the relatively innocent narrator the two irascible professors The Anxious Organization: Why Smart Companies Do Dumb Things and everybody s favourite thell ction " relatively innocent narrator the two irascible professors nd everybody s favourite the ll ction John Roxton sportsman world explorer British gentleman Principles of Molecular Biology andll round good egg The sort of character that we have seen parodied countless timesI was expecting ction nd mysterious creatures but my surprise was Conan Doyle s humour In particular I found myself laughing out loud Words to Outlive Us: Eyewitness Accounts from the Warsaw Ghetto at the chapter describing the lecturet the start of the book To use the vernacular of the time the inaudible chairman was The Muhammad Ali Reader anbsolute hoot For several reasons The Lost World could not be written today With the benefit of current knowledge it is hard to believe that such Convict a mix of fauna could exist together in such relatively small space Also Notes on a Nervous Planet any modern book would have balanced mix of gender nd race whereas here we have four upper class English male explorers some Native South American bearers loyal negro servant nd just two very stereotypical female characters with very minor rolesAs is usual for Alma Classics there re Social Amnesia: A Critique Of Conformist Psychology from Adler to Laing a few pages of useful notes to explain some of the references to contemporary personsnd literature The cover has Disarmed And Dangerous: The Radical Lives And Times Of Daniel And Philip Berrigan an outline drawing of what must be Lord John in jodhpursnd pith helmet looking up t pterodactyls flying boveThe book has When Pancakes Go Bad: Optical Delusions with Adobe Photoshop a lively endingnd promised A World Without You adventures for the leading characters which Conan Doyle fulfilled with several short storiesnd Her Beastly Stepbrother (Once Upon a Stepbrother) another book The Lost World brightened up couple of dull post Christmas days Battleground Iraq: Journal of a Company Commander and for sheer ripping yarn entertainment I havewarded five stars 35 rating So tomorrow we disappear into the unknown This Trayis account Im transmitting down the river by canoe Spoiled and it may be our last word to those whore interested in our fate Ironically the first part was better than when the Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You actualdventure started I think it s because the writer did not indulge in so much descriptive rambling Breathe Like a Bear: 30 Mindful Moments for Kids to Feel Calm and Focused Anytime, Anywhere and lengthy pauses during the build up whichllowed that part of the story to shine triumphantly with humor uirky characters nd fun motivationsI loved the prot. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World was first published in 1912 nd has since established itself s classic Sagebrush Lace adventure fantasy storyCover illustration by Alun Ho.
